Esma asked:

I’ve had a lot of cats in my lifetime, but my 3 year old cat is the first one I’ve had who has bad breath. It’s unbearable!

I will be switching cat foods soon. As soon as this bag runs out, no more Whiskas! But, I don’t know if that is the problem.

I have seen breath fresheners for dogs, but none for cats.

I am going to mention it to her vet next time I take her in to see if it is feline halitosis. I have heard of people brushing their cats’ teeth, but my cat would never, ever let me do that. Is there anything I can do to freshen her breath at home?

Thanks!

P.S. Feel free to chuckle if you would like. I know I would. :-)

Bad Breath Natural Treatment

Bad breath is termed as halitosis, and odor-producing bacteria that grow in our mouth and produce bad odors. The reason that gives rise to these bacteria is improper care of teeth and mouth. If we do not brush our teeth properly and remove the food particles from the mouth and between the teeth, bacteria start growing on these food particles. These bacteria release a sulfur compounds that is mainly responsible for bad breath. Therefore, one must clean his/her mouth and teeth properly with brush or dental floss if needed.

Bad breath is a common and at times temporarily caused due to dryness of mouth, hunger, stress and intake of foods like onion, garlic or smoking. The best remedy is to brush the teeth after intake of certain food items, and cleaning the mouth properly after each meal. This would ensure that the odor-producing bacteria do not get harbour to grow at all and thereby no generation of bad breath.

The cure of is simple and much to do with awareness and precaution on the part of person suffering from bad breath. The remedies are natural, easy to follow and all means are available at home. The easiest and ever time step to be taken to overcome the bad breath is to chew peppermint, so when the mouth does not give the feeling of freshness, chewing peppermint in any form is helpful, example chewing gum. A person who suffers from constant bad breath should take a pumpkin daily to overcome the problem of bad breath, and should gurgle with salty water as frequent as possible. Taking one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before having a meal is very effective in combating the growth of bacteria that leads to bad breath.

Cleaning the mouth and teeth properly is the ideal step, and brushing the teeth with baking soda has proved its effectiveness in combating bad breath. Water intake must be taken into consideration as insufficient intake of water also leads to the problem of bad breath. A widely recommended home remedy is blanch Thyme-Leaved Savory and gurgle. This helps immensely in overcoming the problem and prevents the generation of bad breath. Drinking of chamomile tea is also very effective if taken on regular basis.

Other home remedies you should try:

o To treat halitosis, chew on fresh parsley

o Mix water with a drop of oregano oil in and drink it.

o For better breath chew on mint leaves

o Gargle baking soda in water.

o Drink a hot cup of green tea. You should notice the change immediately.

o Chew on sunflower seeds and then wash your mouth with water.

o Mix a half of lemon juice with lukewarm water and wash your mouth with it.

o Use baking soda as a tooth paste.

o Chamomile tea is as good as the green tea. Just drink it while it’s hot.

o Gargle salty water if you didn’t like the baking soda advice.

Bad breath is not a serious problem, but it causes discomfort to the person having it and people around. So, one must be careful about and it, and must consult a doctor if nothing seems to help in long run.
